Some of the most famous monsters in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh have been reimagined for the modern era, as Yugi Muto’s creatures are featured in the new Chaos Origins expansion, all with new powers that make them fit much better in the modern competitive formats.
Yugi Muto might have been the protagonist of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga and anime, but he mostly won through plot convenience. His deck didn’t make much sense and had little in the way of synergy, meaning he leaned pretty heavily on the Heart of the Cards to win. In Yugi’s defense, he existed at the very beginning of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, meaning the card game was still being created, so many of his iconic cards were developed on the fly to fit the story of a weekly manga.
Yugi Muto’s Monsters Are Reborn In Yu-Gi-Oh Chaos Origins
The Yu-Gi-Oh card game has been around for decades, and the meta has evolved a great deal beyond Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon. Konami loves bringing back cards from the early days and revamping them for the modern meta, as seen in the Chaos Origins set, where many of Yugi’s old monsters are back and more fearsome than ever.
The Chaos Origins set launched on July 2, 2026, and it features 100 new cards, including more Extended Arts and a retooled Starlight Rare aesthetic, where the border of the cards now has a rainbow border and more distinct colors. The most exciting aspect for old-school fans is that cards like Summoned Skull, Celtic Guardian, Black Luster Soldier, Kuriboh, and Magician of Black Chaos now have fresh iterations.
Yugi’s Cards Have Received A Massive Upgrade
In Chaos Origins, Summoned Skull can search for a Ritual Monster by banishing its associated Ritual Spell; Celtic Guardian can cause the player to reveal their hand to let them draw three and discard two; Black Luster Soldier can only be hit by targeted effects and cannot be destroyed in battle; Kuriboh lets the player set a Quick Spell card when it’s discarded from the hand and activate/act as tribute for the Light and Darkness Ritual straight away; and Magician of Black Chaos protects Spells and Traps from being destroyed.
Yugi’s cards aren’t the only ones returning in Chaos Origins, as the Sacred Beasts from Yu-Gi-Oh GX have also received new cards. There’s also yet another iteration of Pot of Greed, called Pot of Sloth, as Yu-Gi-Oh cannot help but reference that annoying piece of pottery.
The Yu-Gi-Oh card game is almost unrecognizable from the early days, with a drastically faster pace and far more card effects active at any one time. Hopefully, seeing the familiar faces from Yugi’s era will entice fans from the old days back to the game to see just how strong they’ve become.
