Bucket List of the Dead Anime Is Leaving Netflix in July 2026

Studio BUG FILMS garnered high praise and recognition this past spring for its stunning anime adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s Witch Hat Atelier. Surprisingly, the studio has only led the production of one other series: the hilarious horror-comedy Zom100: Bucket List of the Dead.

Zom 100 was a hit when it aired on Adult Swim’s Toonami block back in 2024, though it initially found a home on Netflix in July 2023. Now, just three years later, the streaming service is officially bidding farewell to an anime that gave its audience a lot more than zombie scares and brain bashing.

Netflix Will No Longer Host the Best Zombie Anime of the Decade

It isn’t new for anime series, or any production in general, to have their breakups with Netflix. The most iconic zombie anime since High School of the Dead is parting ways for the same reason that other series have left: licensing rights. Unfortunately, Netflix isn’t fighting to maintain the relationship. So, Zom: 100 will be officially leaving the streaming service on July 8, with the last chance to watch it on July 7.

Zom: 100 centers around office worker Akira Tendo, who suffered an all-too-common issue. He absolutely hated his job. Luckily, just before his next grueling shift, he realized that Japan had been struck by a zombie virus. He cared little about the end of the world because the world’s end meant he was free to take the day off for the rest of his life.

BUG FILMS’ debut production received a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it didn’t become a hit solely because of its comedy and bright visuals. The anime’s highly relatable themes resonated deeply with its audience, and it introduced something new that other zombie apocalypse anime series have yet to explore.

Akira’s hatred for his job wasn’t born out of laziness. He was severely burnt out and felt trapped by thankless corporate work. With the end of the world, Akira was given the relief and freedom that he didn’t have before.

Zom: 100 takes a zombie outbreak’s typical doom and gloom and turns it into something more feel-good than fear-driven. Rather than soul-crushing paperwork, his days became brighter with the many colorful and unexpected experiences of the apocalypse, hence why the blood is animated in a myriad of vibrant hues instead of the standard red.

To the disappointment of Zom: 100’s viewership, the series has yet to be picked up for a second season. In the wake of Witch Hat Atelier’s anime adaptation, a bigger and more successful name, BUG FILMS, has yet to issue any announcement about Zom: 100 Season 2.

The anime’s departure from Netflix only means a loss of visibility and, thus, a lost opportunity to gain more traction. However, fortunately for fans of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, all 12 episodes of the anime are still available to stream on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Prime Video.

The poster for Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead depicts Akira Tendo leaping forward joyfully while Shizuka Mikazuki runs after him and Kenichiro Ryuzaki yells from a truck.
