Dune Part Three Trailer Officially Unveils the Sci-Fi Event of 2026

The new trailer for Dune: Part Three is here. With five months to go before the conclusion of the epic trilogy debuts, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have unveiled a new look at the biggest sci-fi movie of the year.

Dune: Part Three opens on Dec. 17, going head-to-head with Avengers: Doomsday. Unlike Doomsday, Dune: Part Three will play in IMAX theaters.

What is Dune: Part Three About?

Set 17 years after Dune: Part Two, Dune: Part Three sees Paul Atreides ascendant as the religious savior Muad’Dib among the Fremen, and the Emperor of the known universe. Such untold power does not come without challenges, as several powerful houses and other political entities that prospered under the old order still resist Paul’s rule. Paul must deal with threats from without, as well as a conspiracy from within his circle of trust, and perhaps most deadly of all, Chani, the lover he betrayed to solidify his power through marriage to Princess Irulan.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune: Part Three from a screenplay he co-wrote with Brian K. Vaughan (known writing comics like Saga and Y: The Last Man). The sci-fi epic stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Rebecca, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, each reprising their role from the first two Dune movies. Robert Pattinson joins the Dune cast in Part Three as Scytale.

The Dune Trilogy Reaches Its End, But the Franchise Continues

Villeneuve has said that Dune: Part Three, which adapts the second Dune novel, Dune Messiah, is the end of his work in Frank Herbert’s universe. Chalamet has said much the same. Herbert’s later Dune novels — Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune — are significantly stranger than the first two, embracing more sci-fi elements and shifting focus away from Paul as the story’s anchor, with some huge time jumps between installments.

“It’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve previously explained of his Dune movies. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done, and that’s finished.” Where Dune and Dune: Part Two were one narrative split in half, Dune: Part Three, with its 17-year time jump, acts more like a true sequel, especially since Villeneuve wasn’t certain he’d make the third movie when he began work on the first two.

However, Warner Bros. has already expanded the Dune franchise beyond Villeneuve’s trilogy. The streaming television series Dune: Prophecy, adapting the Dune prequel Sisterhood of Dune by Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson, debuted on HBO in 2024. Dune: Prophecy Season 2 is expected to debut in 2026.
