It’s been revealed at Anime Expo that 13 years after its debut, the dark action comedy Murciélago is finally getting an anime, and it looks to be an incredibly wild ride. Yoshimurakana’s Murciélago stars Kuroko Koumori, a former death row inmate guilty of killing 715 people since childhood who’s evaded death in exchange for working as a state-sanctioned executioner. Kuroko carries out her new job in tandem with Hinako Tozakura, a junior high student with crazy driving skills, and the series is all about their daily exploits of killing people and Kuroko hitting on every girl with a pulse.
Murciélago is one of the craziest action manga a person can read, a statement that’s both a compliment and an insult, and 13 years after it made its debut, it’s been announced at Anime Expo 2026 that Murciélago will receive an anime adaptation streaming exclusively on HIDIVE in 2027. That’s still a long way away, but with how good the anime looks to be and how fun the original manga is, it’s sure to be well worth the wait.
Why Murciélago Will Be An Incredible Anime To Watch In 2027
Murciélago might still be a year away, but there’s still plenty of reason to be excited about it. Visually speaking, the teaser trailer showcases that Murciélago will boast very fluid and all-around great art and animation courtesy of Satelight and Staple Entertainment, all of which will do wonders for both its comedy and action scenes. Series directors Takashi Naoya and Matsuo Asami are known for their work on Tales of Wedding Rings and Studio Deen’s Shiboyugi, and with how fun those anime were, Murciélago is bound to be even better.
More than that, of course, will be the story. Murciélago is a series that prides itself on audacious black comedy, with its jokes revolving around not only the extreme ways people die or get hurt, but the selfish and absurd ways the cast reacts to the violence and other terrible things that happen to themselves and others. That won’t be appealing to everyone, but it’s still nothing short of hilarious, and it will be great to watch in animation.
That idea is even what makes a character like Kuroko appealing; Kuroko is a violent psychopath constantly preying on women, even if they’re underage, but because the series is so over-the-top and rarely lets her get her way, it always loops back around to being funnier than it has any right being. Kuroko makes Murciélago work specifically because she’s such a terrible person, and it will be even more fun to watch her absurdity play out in animation in 2027.
The 2020s Continue To Be An Amazing Era For Yuri Anime
Something else that’s noteworthy about Murciélago getting an anime is that it further cements the 2020s as an amazing era for yuri anime. With shows like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk, and even upcoming titles like I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day and CloverWorks’ The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All, yuri anime have slowly gone from a rarity to a staple of the community, and they even have great productions to complement their stories more often than not as well.
2026’s Most Tragic Doomed Yuri Is Here And You Don’t Want To Miss Crunchyroll’s Sneak Peek
The most tragic doomed yuri anime in years is finally here, and this stunning Crunchyroll sneak peek proves that you do not want to miss it.
There’s never been a better time to be a yuri fan, and even with how different it is from what some fans are used to, Murciélago will do wonders to keep that trend going. Murciélago has everything going for it to be one of the best anime on HIDIVE after it premieres, and hopefully, more information about its 2027 release window will come out soon enough.
