The Spy x Family franchise started with Tatsuya Endo’s titular manga series. Initially released in 2023, the first Spy x Family musical condensed the manga’s first few story arcs into a standalone production.

The show featured double casting for its adult leads, Loid and Forger, with Win Morisaki and Hiroki Suzuki portraying the former character. Fuka Yuzuki and Mirei Sasaki portrayed Yor — a powerrful assassin who agrees to marries Loid to keep her brother from discovering her secret life.

Written as an action-comedy, Spy x Family tells the story of an elite spy, an infamous assassin and their five-year-old telepathic daughter, Anya. For each of their own reasons, all three housemates try to keep their true identities from one another, which often leads to comical misunderstandings. In the “Bomb Dog” arc, Anya meets a Great Pyrenees dog who possesses the ability to see the future.

In Spy x Family’s “Luxury Cruise” or “Cruise Adventure” arc, Yor accepts a mission to protect a mob heiress named Olka Gretcher and her child from being killed by a group of hitmen while traveling aboard the Princess Lorelei cruise liner.

To her dismay, Loid and Anya end up joining her on the trip. During this mission, Yor internally grapples with vocation as an assassin as she realizes that what she truly longs to do is use her skills to protect vulnerable people.

For this production, Win Morisaki is reprising his role as Loid. However, Hiroki Suzuki is being replaced with Kento Kiuchi. Additionally, Mirei Sasaki’s role as Yor has been passed on to Maaya Kiho for Spy x Family 2. However, Fuka Yuzuki is reprising her role as Yor.

Due to the demanding nature of the role, the first Spy x Family musical split the role of Anya Forger between four different actors. Spy x Family 2’s all-new Anya “triple cast” includes Seina Izumiya, Kana Kozano and Reiko Mano.

The first Spy x Family musical had its opening run at Tokyo’s Imperial Theater from March 8-29, 2023. The show then moved to the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Kobelco Grand Hall for all of April 2023. Its third run was held at Fukuoka’s Hakataza Theater in May 2023.

Unlike its predecessor, Spy x Family 2: Bomb Dog Arc and Luxury Cruise Ship Arc will be performed as a ‘two-act’ show. On September 22, 2026, it will debut at Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall, where it will continue to host its initial round of performances until Oct. 29. The show will then begin its 2026 nationwide tour, hosted by various venues in Fukuoka (Nov. 7-13), Hyogo (Nov. 17-26), Aichi (Dec. 1-11) and Yamagata (Dec. 19-29).

The Spy x Family anime series is currently streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll. Tatsuya Endo’s bestselling Spy x Family manga series is available in English from VIZ Media.
