Crunchyroll’s Biggest New Fantasy Anime, Witch Hat Atelier, Officially Confirms Season 2 Return

After a magical first season, Coco’s journey is officially continuing with Witch Hat Atelier season 2. Crunchyroll has confirmed that the hit fantasy series’ second outing will continue releasing on its streaming library, bringing fans back to one of the most beautifully crafted anime worlds in recent years. Following a breakout debut that won over manga readers and anime-only fans alike, the series is already shaping up to be one of the platform’s biggest returning titles.

Season 2 picks up right after the events of Serpentback Cave, with Coco and the other apprentices now facing the fallout from the Brimmed Caps’ attack. With plenty of mysteries still waiting to be answered, the story is only just beginning to scratch the surface of its magical world.

Another reason to be excited is that BUG FILMS is returning to handle the animation. The first season stood out for faithfully bringing Kamome Shirahama’s stunning artwork to life, and the same creative team is back for the next chapter. With Ayumu Watanabe directing, Hiroshi Seko writing the series composition, and Yuka Kitamura once again composing the music, Witch Hat Atelier season 2 already has everything it needs to keep that momentum going.

Witch Hat Atelier’s season 1 finale ended on a huge cliffhanger. Deep within the ruins of Romonon beneath Serpentback Cave, Qifrey, Coco, and Tetia found themselves surrounded by a horde of ancient gold statues that despise magic. With Qifrey badly injured, protecting his apprentices suddenly became almost impossible. At the same time, the rest of the group was left dealing with the aftermath of the Brimmed Caps’ ambush after forbidden magic transformed Euini into a monstrous scalewolf right before their eyes.

Season 2 is set to pick up in the middle of that chaos. The mystery surrounding the Brimmed Caps, especially Iguin, the one-eyed masked witch who first handed Coco the forbidden magic book, is finally expected to move into the spotlight. At the same time, Coco’s journey as a witch is about to become much more complicated as she searches for a way to reverse the spell that turned her mother into stone without falling into the same forbidden magic she has been warned to avoid.

✗ That answer needs more filler training! The answer is Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer is animated by studio ufotable, renowned for its gorgeous visual effects. MAPPA has produced Jujutsu Kaisen, took over Attack on Titan: The Final Season from WIT Studio, and animated Chainsaw Man.

This beautifully contemplative series about an elven mage reflecting on mortality and the passage of time after her hero party’s quest ends charmed audiences and critics alike with its unique, introspective storytelling.

✗ That answer needs more filler training! The answer is Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is consistently rated as one of the greatest anime of all time. The story follows two brothers who attempted a forbidden alchemical technique. What taboo did Edward and Alphonse Elric commit?

✓ Correct! Edward and Alphonse attempted human transmutation to bring their deceased mother back to life. ✗ That answer needs more filler training! The answer is human transmutation — specifically, attempting to resurrect their dead mother. His mission, Operation Strix, requires him to build a fake family — leading him to adopt the telepathic Anya and marry the assassin Yor, creating one of anime’s most beloved found families.

✗ That answer needs more filler training! The answer is Twilight. Agent Dusk and Shadow are fictional names, while Nightfall is actually the codename of another WISE agent, Fiona Frost, who has a crush on Loid. Twilight is Westalis’s greatest spy and the heart of Spy x Family’s charming story.

✗ That answer needs more filler training! The answer is Funimation. Netflix Anime is part of Netflix and operates independently, HIDIVE is Sentai Filmworks’ streaming service, and AnimeLab was a smaller Australian service. Funimation — once Crunchyroll’s biggest rival — was fully absorbed into the Crunchyroll platform.

Are you an anime sensei — or still on episode one?

Things are only becoming more dangerous for Coco from here. The Brimmed Caps continue trying to pull her to their side, while the Knights Moralis are keeping a close watch on her every move. Caught between those two worlds, Coco’s goal of saving her mother could force her to question everything she has learned about magic. That conflict between accepted magic and forbidden spells looks set to become one of season 2’s biggest storylines.

BUG FILMS Returns To Animate The Stunning World Of Witch Hat Atelier Season 2

When BUG FILMS was first announced as the studio behind Witch Hat Atelier, plenty of fans had their doubts. The studio was still relatively new and had just gone through major production delays during Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead‘s run. On top of that, Kamome Shirahama’s manga is famous for its incredibly detailed artwork, leaving many wondering whether any studio could faithfully bring those pages to life.

Episode 5 was probably the moment that erased any remaining doubts. Reports revealed that the episode alone used around 20,000 drawings, far beyond the 3,000 to 5,000 usually seen in a weekly TV anime. That extra effort was easy to spot, especially during Qifrey’s water dragon sequence. In the manga, it is already an incredible moment, but BUG FILMS expanded it into one of the most visually impressive scenes of the entire season. By the time the Witch Hat Atelier finale aired, there was little doubt that the studio had done Kamome Shirahama’s artwork justice.

That is why the season 2 announcement feels so reassuring. BUG FILMS is not stepping into unfamiliar territory anymore; it has already shown that it understands what makes Witch Hat Atelier so special. With the same studio returning and Coco’s story only getting bigger from here, fans have every reason to look forward to the next chapter.
