BBC Moves To Cut 550 Jobs In A Bid To Save 0 Million

The BBC announced on Wednesday that it plans to cut 550 jobs by the start of 2027-28 as part of a three-year effort to save £500 million ($670 million). Director General Matt Brittin shared the news with staff in June, just a month after taking over in May.

News of the downsizing first broke in April, with Wednesday’s communication spelling out the specific workforce numbers. Voluntary redundancy has been made available to employees affected by the reductions.

The 550 job cuts announced will save the BBC £160 million ($200 million) and will affect staff across the News, Nations, and Content divisions. One hundred of those roles will be gone by the end of the current financial year.

The 550 reductions make up just one piece of a much larger restructuring effort. By the end of the three-year timeline, up to 2,000 roles are expected to be eliminated, cutting the organization’s costs by 10%. An additional 700 corporate cuts are expected to follow in the coming months.

Together with the workforce reductions, the BBC expects to lose 100 to 150 hours of original programming by the end of 2027-28. A review of chief presenter roles is also underway, driven by BBC News‘s savings requirements.

Jonathan Munro, BBC News and Current Affairs interim chief executive, addressed the review in a follow-up memo to staff, stating, “Our news presenters have a unique relationship with our audiences. However, given the savings we need to make across the whole of BBC News, we are reviewing our chief presenter roles.

This is designed to ensure we have the right number of presenters, deployed as flexibly and efficiently as possible, to balance audience needs with best value for money.
