Alex Garland’s dystopian war thriller Civil War is coming to free streaming at exactly the right time. Civil War is one of the 250 free streaming movies included in Pluto TV’s Americana 2026 collection, which is, perhaps, a curious choice but one that some may appreciate.
With the United States of America celebrating its 250th birthday on Saturday, July 4th, there’s sure to be plenty of unbridled patriotism going around. For those who aren’t quite as amenable to all that nationalistic cheer, Civil War‘s sobering take on America’s potential future offers a welcome bit of holiday counter-programming.
Civil War Is Streaming Free For the Fourth of July
Set in the near future, Civil War follows a group of war journalists as they attempt to survive and report the truth as the United States stands on the brink of civil war. Garland wrote and directed the dystopian war movie. It was A24’s most expensive movie ever, grossing $127.3 million on a $50 million budget.
Civil War earned strong reviews from critics and has an 81% “Certified Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics found the movie “tough and unsettling by design,” and called it “a gripping close-up look at the violent uncertainty of life in a nation in crisis.”
CBR’s Civil War review concluded, “Whether wary audiences go into Civil War expecting a particular sort of pre-planned reaction, they’ll come away with something to think about and have to decide for themselves whether the thought experiment is a matter worth pursuing.”
Audiences were more divided on Civil War, awarding it a 69% user approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Users praised Civil War for its immersiveness, but were frustrated by its unwillingness to divulge the conflict’s backstory.
Civil War Is Sobering Holiday Viewing
Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman. Speaking to CBR around the time of the movie’s release, the cast reflected on how unsettlingly relevant Civil War felt.
“While we were making this film, during rehearsal, the Ukrainian-Russian war started, so it’s not like this isn’t happening all over the world,” Dunst said. “It’s just, I think, shocking for people to see that democracy is gone in this film, and how terrifying that is, and people should really take this film as a warning, and appreciate what they have, and start treating people like human beings.”
“Any great artwork should feel timely, should feel something that you connect [with],” Moura added. “I wonder, what are people going to think about Civil War in 15 years? Or, how would this film have been received 10 years ago? But somehow, when you get to do something that makes sense, or gives reactions like the one you have in the moment that we’re living, that’s where strong pieces of art make sense.”
