Infinity Ward today at Fanatics Fest showcased Kill Block, a modular map that houses the next iteration of Gunfight in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Infinity Ward continues to drop new details about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, following massive reveals about campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ over the last month. This weekend, the developer is heading to Fanatics Fest NYC to give attendees an opportunity to try out a brand-new experience, Kill Block. Housing the next iteration of Gunfight (first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019), Kill Block is a modular, adaptive map that changes its layout round-to-round.
We got a chance to check out the mode when we visited Infinity Ward back in May, where we were quite impressed with what Infinity Ward has put together. Now, we can dive a bit deeper into how the map works.
Welcome to West Bridge Military Training
More commonly known as Kill Block, the map is an off-the-books facility that’s been specifically designed to be modular and offer a unique experience match-to-match. At launch, Kill Block will have more than 500 possible configurations and support the Gunfight game mode, including 3v3 and the all-new 10v10 variant. Future plans include making the map compatible with other core multiplayer modes and adding in more “Slabs.”
So, how does Kill Block work? The map is split into three modular sections, two outer areas known as End Slabs, and a middle combat space known as the Central Slab. Much like how your loadout switches every two rounds in Gunfight, Kill Block’s slabs will also change, creating different configurations. End Slabs serve as the main spawn locations for each team. Meanwhile, the Central Slab is the main focal point, and usually features various tactical layouts. In fact, certain Slabs recreate iconic locations from previous Infinity Ward titles, including Crash (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare), Storage Town (Call of Duty: Warzone), and Shoot House (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019).
Beyond this, the versatility of the Slabs is what makes Kill Block so interesting. Beyond the ability to recreate classic maps, the 500 possible configurations can produce mocked-up streets, World War II-like trenches, close-quarters compounds, and open urban blocks. Some Slabs even contain different simulated weather, including heavy rain or snow flurries. For some possible configurations, be sure to check out Infinity Wards’ extensive blog.
An Extensive Multiplayer Experience
Kill Block and Gunfight are just one part of the overarching multiplayer suite Infinity Ward is putting together for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. In addition to this map, the game will launch with an additional 12 core multiplayer maps that, as we learned in our discussion with the multiplayer team, are all hand-crafted for 6v6 and not pulled from existing Warzone maps. The studio will also deliver larger scale battle maps that include armored vehicles.
Beyond the ability to recreate classic maps, the 500 possible configurations can produce mocked-up streets, World War II-like trenches, close-quarters compounds, and open urban blocks.
Beyond maps, the multiplayer also launches with 24 primary weapons, a re-worked Create-a-Class, and a slew of classic ((i.e. Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint) and new game modes (i.e. Inflation). Party Modes will also be available at launch.
Outside of multiplayer, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 also features a full campaign set primarily on the Korean Peninsula alongside some global locations. There’s also DMZ, a full-scale Extraction Shooter that’s quite a massive upgrade over its first iteration in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
