The next movie in The Conjuring Universe is set to be released earlier than expected.
A new installment in the horror franchise has had its date moved up on Warner Bros.’ calendar, revealing a much earlier release than expected. There are multiple projects across The Conjuring Universe‘s timeline which are currently in development. This includes an untitled TV show for HBO Max being developed by showrunner Nancy Won, alongside executive producers James Wan and Peter Safran. Most recently, Garrett Wareing and Amanda Fix were cast as a young Ed and Lorraine Warren for The Conjuring: First Communion, a prequel scheduled for release on September 10, 2027.
Now, according to Deadline, another movie connected to The Conjuring Universe has had its 2027 release date moved up, meaning it’ll be coming out sooner than expected. The Revenge of La Llorona, a sequel to 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona, will arrive in theaters on February 26, 2027, moving up from its original April 9 release date. While it’s not considered a major part of the franchise, The Curse of La Llorona saw Tony Amendola reprise his role as Father Perez from Annabelle, connecting the movie, and now it’s sequel, to The Conjuring.
The Revenge of La Llorona switches release dates with Sam Esmail’s Panic Carefully, which now holds the April 9, 2027 release date. The horror movie’s February 26 release confirmation pushes it up by over a full month, while also delivering a wider gap between it and The Conjuring: First Communion. While James Wan, Gary Dauberman, and Emile Gladstone return as executive producers, the sequel features a new creative team: Santiago Menghini serves as director, while Sean Tretta is the screenwriter.
The horror sequel follows a splintered family who are forced to team up to save their children from La Llorona’s curse. The movie sees Raymond Cruz return as Rafael Olvera from the first movie. The film also stars Monica Raymund, Jay Hernandez, Edy Ganem, Martín Fajardo, Acston Luca Porto, and Avie Porto. Though elements of the story remain shrouded in mystery for now, it appears the movie will have a similar approach to The Curse of La Llorona, but with enough differences to redeem the franchise.
The Curse of La Llorona was critically panned upon its release, earning a 26% critics score based on 188 reviews and a 34% audience score from 2,500 ratings. However, it was still a box office success, earning $123.2 million against a $9 million budget. While this already indicates a sequel was bound to happen at some point, the length of time in between movies and the new creative team behind it signals a very different vision will define the follow-up.
Since The Revenge of La Llorona seems like it’ll have familiar elements, though, nothing is certain about what to expect from the film. Luckily, its moved-up release date signals plenty of faith in the movie, while keeping it somewhat removed from the other installment in The Conjuring Universe coming out later that year. With a new release date set in stone, more information about the movie is liable to arrive sooner rather than later.
