Two of Star Wars‘ most important characters are reinvented with a single line of dialog. Ever since Episode IV: A New Hope introduced Star Wars‘ main cast, the franchise has presented countless alien species and civilizations with all kinds of unique appearances and skills. Ancient Force-wielding beings like the Ones of Mortis push Star Wars into the realm of cosmic allegory, and entities like the Bendu exist outside the traditional conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. Terrifying creatures like the Zillo Beast, the shape-shifting Clawdites, the insectoid Geonosians, the aquatic Mon Calamari, and the enigmatic Chiss contribute rich cultures with complex histories of their own.
Against this extensive backdrop of characters, Han Solo and Chewbacca don’t immediately stand out physically or skills-wise. Yet, Han and Chewie are two of Star Wars‘ most indispensable figures. Han begins as a self-interested smuggler motivated by profit and survival, but he gradually becomes one of the Rebel Alliance’s greatest leaders through choices that place others ahead of himself. Chewbacca complements Han perfectly with his immense physical strength, technical expertise, and an unbreakable moral code with absolute loyalty to his friends. Neither hero can manipulate the Force, but they influence the fate of the galaxy through decisive actions at critical moments.
Han Solo and Chewbacca have earned legendary status after accomplishing feats like rescuing Princess Leia and supporting Luke Skywalker’s assault on the Death Star to help topple the Empire. All along, Han has been known as the third hero in the Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo trinity of heroes, with Chewbacca serving as Han’s sidekick, but this might be a misconception.
Oga Garra Confirms Han Solo Is Chewbacca’s Sidekick
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire #4; Written By Ethan Sacks; Art By Jethro Morales & Roi Mercado
In the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge comics, which feature Rey’s return after the sequel trilogy, Oga Garra narrates unheard parts of the Luke, Leia, and Han’s legend to Rey. Oga recalls the time Han and Chewie were betrayed by Hondo Ohnaka in Batuu; she starts by descrbing Chewie as “that big, beautiful, hairy slab of a Wookie, Chewbacca,” and Han as Chewie’s “loud human sidekick, Han Solo.” This is the first time Han is described as Chewie’s sidekick, which is especially odd coming from someone who must already know Han was both the most renowned bounty hunter and the father of the First Order’s main figurehead, Kylo Ren.
While Oga Garra’s description of Han and Chewie is clearly skewed in favor of the Wookie, there’s plenty of truth in her words. Chewbacca was already an accomplished warrior, engineer, and pilot long before meeting Han, and the events that forged their bond placed Han in the position of the beneficiary of Chewbacca’s life debt rather than his commander. Chewbacca constantly questions Han’s judgment and even overrides him when necessary, with Han regularly trusting those instincts without hesitation. Chewbacca also possesses skills that Han simply lacks, particularly his encyclopedic knowledge of starships and mechanical repairs.
Chewbacca Has Repeatedly Proven He Isn’t A Sidekick
Chewie Achieves A Long History Of Feats Without Han’s Help
Chewbacca’s history is even more impressive when viewed independently from Han Solo. Across both strict canon and Legends, Chewie has fought in conflicts spanning decades, witnessed the rise and fall of governments, worked alongside Jedi, smugglers, freedom fighters, and soldiers, and earned the respect of countless allies throughout the galaxy. Chewbacca’s reputation extends far beyond Kashyyyk, as he’s every bit as capable of piloting the Millennium Falcon and surviving impossible missions as his famous partner. The legendary Wookie’s long lifespan also gives him a perspective few heroes are blessed with, and he connects different eras of the Star Wars timeline through firsthand experience.
Perhaps if Chewbacca communicated through a more traditional language he would be regarded as a true equal to Han Solo. No other Wookiee has carried their people’s ideals across so many corners of the galaxy, as Chewbacca became an unofficial ambassador for Kashyyyk long before the New Republic could formally recognize his contributions. When the Galactic Civil War reached its height, those same qualities made him indispensable to the Rebel Alliance. Han and Chewie’s partnership is one where two equals’ talents complement one another, with Han often serving as the charismatic spokesperson while Chewbacca quietly supplies the experience and technical expertise.
