Sailor Moon Creator Naoko Takeuchi Reveals New Usagi & Chibiusa Artwork

Sailor Moon fans have a beautiful new piece of Naoko Takeuchi artwork to celebrate. The series creator has unveiled a new illustration honoring the shared June 30 birthday of Usagi Tsukino and Chibiusa.

Via the official Sailor Moon X (formerly Twitter) account, Naoko Takeuchi, the creator behind the franchise, released the new color illustration alongside a birthday message celebrating “Usagi-chan & Chibiusa-chan.” The post reads, “Happy Birthday. Today, June 30th, is the birthday of Usagi-chan & Chibiusa-chan! To celebrate their birthday, a delicate and glamorous color illustration has arrived from Naoko Takeuchi-sensei.”

A follow-up post also directed fans to several additional announcements commemorating the occasion, including a new collaboration, an upcoming figure and fan club updates.

The newly released illustration features Chibi Chibi and Chibiusa dressed in elegant white gowns, surrounded by blooming flowers, flowing ribbons and soft pastel light. Chibi Chibi winks while cradling an overflowing bouquet of daisies, tulips and roses tied together with blue ribbons, while Chibiusa extends a glowing flower toward the viewer, as delicate pink petals swirl around the pair against a dreamy backdrop of shimmering hearts.

While the illustration depicts Chibi Chibi rather than Usagi herself, the pairing carries special significance within Naoko Takeuchi’s original Sailor Moon manga. Chibiusa remains one of the franchise’s most beloved heroines as the future daughter of Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba, while Chibi Chibi is ultimately revealed to be Sailor Cosmos — a far-future incarnation of Sailor Moon.

Together, the two characters represent different points along Usagi’s legacy, making them a fitting tribute to the heroine whose birthday they celebrate.

Alongside the birthday illustration, the official Sailor Moon website also unveiled the first key visual for an upcoming collaboration with LINE FRIENDS, scheduled to launch in October 2026.

The crossover pairs the original five Sailor Guardians and Luna with LINE FRIENDS’ iconic characters, including Connie as Sailor Moon, Brown as Tuxedo Mask, Choco as Sailor Mercury, Jessica as Sailor Mars, Leonard as Sailor Jupiter, Sally as Sailor Venus and Oliver Pann sporting Luna’s signature crescent moon and transformation brooch. Additional details about the collaboration will be announced at a later date.

The birthday celebration also spotlighted the official Pretty Guardians fan club, which is open to both Japanese and international members. Overseas memberships currently cost ¥6,600 plus ¥4,000 for shipping, totaling approximately US$65, and include an official membership card, exclusive merchandise, early access to select product releases and lottery opportunities for special Sailor Moon events.

More than 30 years after Sailor Moon first debuted, Takeuchi continues to celebrate the characters that have defined the franchise for generations of readers.
