Transformers Brings Back Starscream’s Most Heroic Design in New Prototype Reveal

In most versions of the Transformers mythos, Starscream is a scheming, conniving Decepticon who plots and plans to usurp Megatron and take control of the Decepticon army. That’s not the case in one universe, however, and that incarnation is soon set to receive a new toy.

DW-E09M Star Fear is a new release from Dr. Wu, with the action figure representing a diminutive version of Starscream from the Shattered Glass universe. Coming complete with various accessories, this take on Starscream takes to the skies despite his size. Redecoing a previous toy, this version showcases a very different shade of the deadly Seeker.

Transformers’ Shattered Glass Starscream Gets a Heroic New Action Figure From Dr. Wu

Dr. Wu’s DW-E09M Star Fear is part of the company’s Extreme Warfare series, which offers smaller versions of classic Transformers characters. These are meant to be in scale with the Generation 1 Micromasters toys, and in the case of this figure, it’s a recolored version of the previously-released DW-E09 toy.

This version of Starscream is colored to resemble his incarnation from the world of Shattered Glass, wherein the Autobots were evil and the Decepticons were heroic. Likewise, Shattered Glass Starscream, instead of being a conniving traitor, is instead fiercely loyal to Megatron. Even his colors are different, with the red and white laid out to make him resemble his Autobot friend, Jetfire.

Starscream transforms into an approximation of an F-15 Eagle, with his robot mode null ray cannons becoming his missiles in vehicle mode. The general design is heavily based on Generation 1, and this includes his other accessories — a throne, a flowing cape and a crown — all based on elements briefly seen in The Transformers: The Movie.

Now 40 years old, the film cemented these items as synonymous with Starscream. The cape is plastic and static while still giving the illusion of movement, but to match the inverted colors of this universe’s Starscream, it’s red instead of purple.

Even with the small size, there’s a good bit of articulation on the toy, especially compared to the Micromasters. The figure’s initial images were shared on the Dr. Wu Weibo account, and the toy itself can be pre-ordered on websites such as ShowZ Store, with the release date tentatively set for about a month from now.

This is just one of many recent action figures from Hasbro, Takara and multiple third-party companies that are based on the Shattered Glass universe, with many of the Autobots and Decepticons in that world having color schemes that either invert their usual ones or reference classic Transformers from the opposite faction.
