There are plenty of contenders for the crown of modern great in the fantasy genre, but one that’s pretty much nailed on for many is The Wheel of Time series from author Robert Jordan. Though it falls just short of absolute behemoths like Game of Thrones, with around 90 million copies sold, it really is probably the best example of an original series that we’ve had since the halcyon days of Tolkien.
That success has also led to a bunch of other adaptations that seek to capitalize on just how beloved it is for fans, with the Prime Video adaptation probably being the most prominent example of that. Unfortunately, that was canceled after three seasons, and it seems like that is never going to be concluded in any meaningful way.
Happily, there’s another release on the horizon that should allow you to work through the story, and it’s a lot more interactive than anything we have had before.
Over on Kickstarter, you should be able to find the crowdfunding campaign for War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time. It is the first direct board game translation of Jordan’s works, and it puts players right at the center of the conflict between Rand al’Thor and The Dark One in a grand strategy board game format.
In sharing some insight into what fans might expect from the project if they do decide to get themselves a copy when it launches, the developer said:
“Robert Jordan’s fantasy masterpiece comes to your table with the first-ever board game based on The Wheel of Time series. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time chronicles the epic conflict between the forces of light and darkness as players wage war across a land of magic, ancient prophecies, and powerful armies set to save the world … or destroy it. The game combines tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics in a thrilling struggle of conquest and survival.”
The campaign to make the game a reality has also been an enormous success, accruing $1,166,993 from 6,156 backers at the time of writing. Though you can no longer directly back the project on Kickstarter, it will be available for purchase, though launch isn’t expected until 2027.
At the very least, the success of the campaign shows there is an enormous demand for more projects tied to the Wheel of Time series. Whether that means anything else is coming down the pipeline remains to be seen, but it would be foolish to leave it behind entirely.
