At this point, collecting free games on Steam may very well become a hobby in and of itself. There are so many on the platform and more being added every day, that the mere act of finding them and clicking add to library is tantamount to playing a video game. Of course, once one is done collecting them all, they may want to spend a little time trying them out, especially those with positive reviews, novel ideas, or a clever hook that’s bound to draw you in and never let go.
Among all the huge free games on Steam and the humble little indies are a handful of truly excellent titles that garner not just rave reviews, but exclusively good ones. Steam’s handy rating system allows us to see exactly what percentage of reviews skew on the positive side, and, in the case of a recently released story-driven title, they’re all giving the big blue thumbs up. It’s great to see, especially for those who’ve been searching for something new to play, but don’t fancy emptying their wallets in the process.
While developers on Steam are handing out games on a fairly frequent basis completely for free, for the most part, these titles tend to veer more towards being mechanically novel, rather than narratively complex. Making a game for free is ultimately a great way to raise awareness of your catalog of releases, and little else, as there’s no financial incentive, at least for indie developers. That’s why Our Wonderland, the latest free game on Steam, is so unique, as its heavy focus on narrative positions it perfectly to appeal to those seeking more story-driven experiences.
Our Wonderland is a horror fantasy visual novel with over 20 hours of story to experience. Packed with violent ways to die, and delightful romance at the heart of it, and thousands of lines of dialogue, Our Wonderland explores themes of friendship and getting older through the lens of five friends searching for their missing friend in a messed-up fantasy world of twisted desires and warped childlike wonder. Throughout the experience, the player will need to make several choices, all of which decide which of the game’s many different endings they’ll get and, ultimately, just how violent it’ll be.
It is worth noting that Our Wonderland features numerous mature and complex themes, many of which are dark in nature. There is a censored mode that pixelates the gore, making it a little more palatable for those averse to blood.
Our Wonderland was originally released on an episodic basis on itch.io in 2021 before being recently remastered and released on Steam on July 9, 2026. Since releasing on Steam, it has managed to garner 100% positive reviews from those who have played it. That’s certainly nothing to scoff at, especially as a lot of free games on Steam can go under the radar or completely overlooked. Many of the reviews praise the game’s art, writing, and overall story, with some even calling it the best visual novel ever made, and one reviewer even stating that it changed their life.
Of course, for those who tend to avoid visual novels, there are plenty of other free Steam games available. However, considering the lack of a barrier to entry, coupled with the glowing reviews, it sounds like Our Wonderland may be worth trying, if only for an hour or two. Regardless, it is great to see such varied free experiences popping up on Steam, as it means anyone can build a huge library of excellent experiences without ever needing to break out their wallet.
