One of the greatest anime of all time is finally returning with a brand-new series by a legendary gaming auteur. The CloverWorks, Inc. Industry Panel at Anime Expo 2026 officially debuted the English version of a new trailer for the next Evangelion project, which will be a full series by Yoko Taro, the visionary behind the Drakengard and Nier franchise.
The new Evangelion anime will feature a screenplay and story written by Yoko Taro himself, with music by Keiichi Okabe (who previously worked on both the original Nier and Nier: Automata), and direction by Evangelion veterans Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toko Yatabe. Little is known about Yoko Taro’s Evangelion anime otherwise, but the trailer offers some hints at what the series could cover.
Yoko Taro is Writing a Brand-New Evangelion Series
A new Evangelion anime alone is a big deal, but Yoko Taro personally writing the series’ screenplay while crafting its story direction is a huge plus. Yoko Taro’s brand of depression, darkness, philosophy, and nuanced character writing is right in line with series creator Hideaki Anno’s, making him the perfect artist to take over the Evangelion franchise in Anno’s absence.
Studio Khara’s teaser for Yoko Taro’s Evangelion series includes a message, written as, “An eternal summer vacation. This place is our paradise. This place is our graveyard. What we hear is the song of eternal damnation. We pray thy souls rest in peace.” The trailer itself features scenes of an overgrown piano and violin in what looks to be a decayed area, implying that the new series will take place between the events of Evangelion 3.0 and Thrice Upon a Time‘s ending.
The New Evangelion Anime Will Be Directed By Kazuya Tsurumaki, The Director of the Rebuild Movies
Bringing Yoko Taro’s writing to life will be Kazuya Tsurumaki, one of several directors who worked on the Rebuild of Evangelion franchise. Alongside Hideaki Anno, Tsurumaki co-directed all four movies in the Rebuild series. Tsurumaki also directed Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, a highly stylish (and at times confusing) alternate version of Gundam‘s Universal Century timeline.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX feels like Gundam‘s own take on the Rebuilds, making Tsurumaki the perfect person to work with Taro on his new Evangelion anime. It’s unclear when the new Evangelion series will release or how many episodes it’ll run for, but in Yoko Taro and Kazuya Tsurumaki, it’s bound to be a great new entry in one of anime’s most important franchises.
