Acclaimed indie scribe Zoe Thorogood confirms that she was originally meant to write Absolute Wonder Woman, as well as why she chose to turn the opportunity down.
Per AIPT Comics, Thorogood recently opened up about her Absolute Wonder Woman experience on social media, stating, “Every time I see panels from Absolute Wonder Woman and remember originally I was going to write it, I shudder because that book was absolutely meant to be written by Kelly [Thompson].”
Zoe Thorogood Can Still Create Something for DC Comics
Thorogood went on to note, “I dropped out of the project because I knew deep down I wasn’t the guy to write Wonder Woman (well, and my life was falling apart, and my brother killed himself, but that’s besides the point).” Thorogood added, “But I think that… It would be cool to work more with DC, but I honestly think I’m just supposed to be an Absolute Weird Indie Guy.”
Thorogood is perhaps best known for The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott, It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth, her 2022 run on fan-favorite indie horror series Hack/Slash, and for co-creating Spider-UK for Marvel Comics. While Thorogood’s work has also been featured across various indie and mainstream titles alike, her sole writing credit for DC Comics comes courtesy of “Harley Quinn and the Seven Sidekicks” in 2023’s Harley Quinn: Black+White+Redder #4.
Notably, it is Harley Quinn whom Thorogood stated she would be most interested in exploring for DC Comics. When asked which DC character she would most want to write, Thorogood replied, “Probably Harley Quinn. I don’t think I’m built for writing heroes… As long as I could draw her too.”
Where DC Comics’ Absolute Wonder Woman is Heading Next
Even if another writer was originally meant to helm the series, there is no doubt that Kelly Thompson’s Absolute Wonder Woman has been a masterclass in storytelling from the very start. Since the series debuted, readers have followed along as the titular hero faces off against all kinds of reimagined versions of her worst enemies and comes to terms with the exceptionally brutal World of Man that exists within the wider Absolute Universe.
Fortunately, the Absolute Wonder Woman has already crossed paths and become allies with the likes of her world’s Batman, and it is only going to be a matter of time before her list of friends gets exponentially longer. In fact, the Absolute Universe is currently headed towards its very first major crossover event, which readers caught a brief glimpse of in the pages of Absolute Martian Manhunter #12 by writer Deniz Camp and artist Javier Rodríguez.
Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder previously confirmed that it is the Absolute Universe’s Martian Manhunter who will largely be responsible for bringing this world’s heroes together. Snyder also confirmed that the mainline crossover title itself is being written by Absolute Superman scribe Jason Aaron, though each of the Absolute Universe’s key writers will be contributing to the project as a whole. “It’s like a big team effort. So Deniz is there, you know, telling his side of what Martian Manhunter will do,” Snyder explained.
