Critical Role Returns to the Age of Umbra Tonight

There are officially just hours left before Critical Role returns to the Age of Umbra for a brand-new series nearly a year after the original.

Tonight, July 9 at 7pm PST/10pm EST, Critical Role‘s latest limited actual play series Age of Umbra: Sallowlands makes its world premiere. Audiences can tune in to the debut episode of Age of Umbra: Sallowlands on Beacon, Twitch, and YouTube, and can look forward to one of the most harrowing Critical Role campaigns of the year, which is slated to come to a close after six episodes on August 13.

What Is Critical Role’s Age of Umbra: Sallowlands All About — And What Can Fans Expect from It?

Hosted by Game Master, Critical Role co-founder, and Daggerheart designer Matthew Mercer, Age of Umbra: Sallowlands brings audiences back to the infamous setting from 2025’s hit Age of Umbra series. The upcoming follow-up features Laura Bailey alongside Jennifer English, Abubakar Salim, Vico Ortiz, and Zachery Renauldo, who will be taking on the roles of various outcasts and survivors who have set out on an epic quest in the hopes of saving themselves before everything they know falls to pieces.

As noted by the series’ official description, “Age of Umbra: Sallowlands returns to the blighted Halcyon Domain, a bleak realm rotting in the wake of its Pantheon’s abandonment, where ancient wonders crumble into ruin and desperate communities hold fast to the light. The six-part series follows five misfits, outcasts, and survivors into the Sallowlands, a once-vibrant lake of the Old World now transformed into a canyon desert of cracked badlands, swirling dust storms, and long-buried secrets.”

The official description for Age of Umbra: Sallowlands continues, “When a surprising development sends the group beyond the edges of the map, their search for answers could lead them to salvation, or into the jaws of ancient horror. Along the way, they face brutal adversaries and impossible odds in a dark and emotional actual-play series exploring desperation, survival, and love in the face of overwhelming darkness.”

While viewers will be able to follow along with all the action on Twitch and YouTube, Beacon subscribers will receive special perks along with the usual Age of Umbra: Sallowlands experience. These include access to the behind-the-scenes series Age of Umbra Cooldowns, which features footage taken immediately after the end of each episode in order to capture the cast and crew reactions.

Beacon subscribers will also receive ad-free podcast episodes immediately after release, while the same episodes will be released in a two-part format across the two Thursdays following the release of any given episode. YouTube video-on-demand versions of each episode of Age of Umbra: Sallowlands are set to be released the Monday after their respective premiere.

Age of Umbra: Sallowlands is played out within the Daggerheart tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press. As noted by the official press release for the series, Age of Umbra: Sallowlands is set to showcase “the system’s darker, more haunting and heroic potential, where the stakes are high, and every choice brings danger tinged with hope.”

Age of Umbra: Sallowlands premieres at 7pm PST/10pm EST on Thursday, July 9 on the official Critical Role Beacon, Twitch and YouTube channels. New episodes premiere every Thursday up through the series’ finale on August 13.
