The hype is real, and justified, for Batman nowadays. And while that’s often true, in any given year, things have truly ratcheted up for the Caped Crusader as of late, thanks to both DC Studios and DC Comics — the latter stirring the pot recently in a major way by assigning Bruce Wayne a new butler at the decree of a deceased Alfred Pennyworth.
Coming soon, in Batman #12, Wayne will find himself being looked after by a female butler going forward, a decision that sent the comic book series spiraling into a social media controversy as the animated world gears up for what looks to be an outstanding Batman: Knightfall movie trilogy.
And, now, following waves of speculation as to who the she-butler might be in Batman #12, the name has officially been revealed by DC Comics … and it might (key word: might) curb some of the initial outrage and concern from readers.

Batman’s New Butler Is Alfred Pennyworth’s Kin
The first image in this group is a recently released sketch of the character, design card stock, by Jorge Jiménez via his Instagram account, titled “Verity Pennyworth” — settling, once and for all, that Batman’s new butler is kin to Alfred Pennyworth.
“My name is Pennyworth, Verity Pennyworth,” Jiménez wrote. “I’ll see you in Batman #12.”
With one question now answered, another crops up: what is Verity’s blood relation to Alfred? The variations of his kin, historically, include Daphne Pennyworth and Barbara Wilson are two of his nieces and Julia Remarque (Julia Pennyworth in her New 52 arc) is his estranged daughter, meaning Verity Pennyworth is likely an entirely new character making her official debut in Batman #12.
Of course, that probably won’t quell concerns from fans that, given Bruce Wayne’s reputation, she won’t end up in a different kind of sheets at some point in the future, regardless of who she is.
Bruce Wayne’s Reputation Has Fans Concerned About Female Butler Twist
“In about three years she’s gonna have like seven issues sleeping with Bruce, and she’ll have her own fanbase split on whether she should or should not be with [him],” one Batman fan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), a sentiment echoed by another: “Ain’t no way Alfred would have his replacement be a woman. He knows how Bruce is. If she didn’t come with a box of condoms she [wouldn’t be] sent by Alfred!”
That said, it’s very clear that, absent Alfred, Batman is going to need all the help he can get in this series, and Verity Pennyworth clearly has what it takes to carry on Alfred’s legacy, otherwise, he wouldn’t have tasked her with such a daunting ask.
Per the official Batman #12 solicitation: “SIX ASSASSINS. ONE CITY. COUNTLESS WAYS TO DIE! Six of the world’s deadliest killers have descended on Gotham City at once—but who hired them, and who’s the target? Surely, it can’t be the Batman. …As the Caped Crusader races to uncover who set this deadly plan in motion, the late Alfred Pennyworth provides a gift from beyond the grave with the arrival of a brilliant new ally to the Bat-Family at a time when it needs one most.”
