Spider-Man: Brand New Day is three weeks away from release, and the film’s marketing has kicked into overdrive. The film’s two trailers have become the most-viewed trailers within seven days, and the box office projections suggest it will break Toy Story 5‘s record for the biggest opening weekend. With the movie serving as the lead-in to Avengers: Doomsday, there have been questions about whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the beginning of a new series for the Web-Head or a potential final film.
Speaking with SFX magazine, per GamesRadar, producer Amy Pascal discussed the experience of working with Marvel Studios and how it has improved the Spider-Man movies. “Ever since we’ve been making Spider-Man movies with Marvel Studios and the MCU, it has opened up a wealth of opportunity for us. Because in the comics, he does interact with all these characters. So that’s been a wonderful opportunity,” said Pascal. As for what the future holds for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU, Pascal said:
“I never want to be so presumptuous as to say anything is going to be a trilogy or more than one. That would be my dream, of course, but you never know. Because the truth is that the rule that we set for ourselves is to take it one movie at a time. It’s important to us that you don’t have to see one movie to see the other movie.”
It is currently unclear what the future of Spider-Man in the MCU is, given that the contract Sony and Marvel Studios signed back in 2019 is set to be fulfilled with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In 2019, an infamous split between Sony and Disney nearly forced Spider-Man out of the MCU after the initial contract to bring the character into the shared universe had been fulfilled. After months of negotiations, Sony and Disney finally reached an agreement that required Disney to contribute more of the budget while giving it a larger share of the profits.
The 2019 deal was for one solo Spider-Man film and one MCU team-up. However, Tom Holland’s most recent Spider-Man appearances were both in Sony-produced films: No Way Home and the upcoming Brand New Day. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day featuring Marvel characters like The Punisher and Hulk, and potentially introducing the X-Men’s Jean Grey, the lines between a Spider-Man movie and a Marvel team-up film have been blurred. If Spider-Man: Brand New Day does not count as a team-up movie, it would mean Marvel Studios and Sony reached another agreement, allowing the upcoming sequel and Spider-Man to potentially have roles in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
If Sony and Marvel Studios move forward on a fifth Spider-Man film as part of Phase 7, there is also a question of whether director Destin Daniel Cretton will return. Cretton has already begun casting for his live-action adaptation of Naruto, which will seemingly be his follow-up to Brand New Day. There are also questions about whether Cretton will return for Shang-Chi 2. Given how popular the MCU Spider-Man movies have been, a sequel almost seems inevitable. Yet clearly, there are many behind-the-scenes machinations that will need to be worked out.
