A renowned master LEGO builder shares their alternate build of the official Dungeons & Dragons set, turning the build into a spire with new monsters and without using additional pieces. LEGO‘s new wave of sets and Smart Brick builds is coming on August 1, and it will include a plethora of new LEGO Pokemon sets, such as the ORAS Rayquaza build or the sitting Munchlax set. It’s unclear if or when a new Dungeons & Dragons LEGO set will become available, but the first was a huge success among fans.
Unfortunately, the set is slated to be retired soon. In fact, LEGO is retiring the Dungeons & Dragons set on July 31, 2026, so fans only have a few more weeks to snag it before it’s gone. The bad news is that it’s currently sold out on the official LEGO website, and it may not come back before it’s retired. Still, the build is available on Walmart’s website and from other third-party retailers, but fans may have to fork out more money for it than its MSRP of $359.99. For those who have the set or manage to buy one, though, there is a special alternate build waiting for them, and it’s free.

Custom LEGO Dungeons & Dragons Build From Original Set
Master builder Bolt Builds shared their custom build from the original Dungeons & Dragons LEGO set for free on Rebrickable, and it includes new monsters and characters. Not only is the build made using exclusively pieces from the original set, but Bolt Builds also happens to be the original creator of the set. In fact, the Dungeons & Dragons set is a LEGO Ideas product, and Bolt Builds made the original prototype that was accepted by LEGO and turned into a set. Their custom build allows players to turn the tavern and castle ruins into a massive coastal spire, and it includes new monsters, like a Giant Hermit Crab, a Couatl, a young Red Dragon, a Mimic, and a Flameskull. On top of that, the build also features new characters and classes for D&D fans to try.

The Giant Hermit Crab is an amazing addition that makes the coastal vibes of the build immaculate, and it can be a much more surprising threat than a giant dragon for those who use the set to play D&D. The Crab is most likely one of the D&D monsters that players underrate when they first encounter it, so it’s all the more fitting as the big enemy reveal in this build. The Couatl is made from the Beholder’s kit, and the original set’s Mimic beds are turned into a smaller Mimic, instead.
Bolt Builds’ custom build even has a hidden surprise in its free instructions, though. Players can combine the original set with this build with very few adjustments, and they are also detailed in the instructions. LEGO’s D&D Red Dragon’s Tale set cannot be completed with the D&D minifigures for those who don’t own them, unfortunately, as they are sold out on official channels and only appear at much higher rates on third-party websites. But it’s very nice to have the option of creating more characters with this custom build.

The best Dungeons & Dragons classes for beginners all depend on how players build their characters, even if some are not born equal to others, but the beauty of this set is that it allows fans to play a D&D session and see exactly what’s going on. The detailed D&D guide from the original set is not present in Bolt Builds’ MOC, but fans can grab D&D‘s Player’s Handbook and Monster Manual to figure things out.
