Dreaming of building that perfect gaming rig in 2026? Well, it just got a lot harder. If you’ve managed to stay out of the tech news cycle during the last few months, the industry is in a RAM shortage, which experts attribute to the rising need for AI Data Center production and the widespread use of AI services. Any AI tool uses more RAM than the average computer, so it requires a lot of RAM to work well—essentially, AI Usage + Data Center Construction = less RAM for us as consumers.
As a result, the consumer cost of RAM has skyrocketed and will continue to rise, potentially reaching $5,000 for Nvidia’s flagship GeForce RTX 5090 GPU. The same card launched at around $2,000 and has already jumped to over $3,000 for some models. As a gamer myself, this move got me thinking — what else could I actually buy for $5,000? Today’s consumer market is obviously pricier than ever before, but still, there’s got to be some cool stuff out there for five grand, right? The short answer is yes, but you have no idea how much cooler you can be by spending $5k in 2026.
Bilbo Baggins lived modestly, apparently
You won’t be able to fit a gaming rig inside, but you’ll have the coolest hangout spot in town
For just under $5k, you could have your very own Hobbit playhouse. Sure, it might be a tight squeeze, but have you seen housing prices lately? It’s almost bad enough to make you go, “Eh, that’s not too bad,” at a $5k GPU. If this thing can fit a twin-size mattress, a space heater, and maybe a little bit of insulation, I can promise you I would have paid good money to live there when I was in undergrad.
Living like Bilbo Baggins might also come with its own perks. He wound up coming out ahead and even gained profound knowledge in the process. Even if you’re not all about the way Bilbo went out, think about how much cooler this house would make you than the average Joe. Frank Lloyd Wright would be proud.
Get a Culinary Arts Certificate
If you’ve ever watched The Bear and thought, “I could do that”
You can receive a collegiate culinary arts education for under $5k through various community colleges and culinary institutes, but the one I found the most interesting was at Austin Community College, where they advertise having two high-grade kitchens in their pair of entirely student-run restaurants, an in-house catering service, a whole staff of chefs, and workshops in budgeting, sanitation, and costs.
If you’re sick of your current career choice and want to be a bit more creative each day, you can opt to change career fields entirely and get an education in doing so for less than what experts say the Nvidia 5090 series graphics cards will cost in the coming year. That’s a sentence I never thought I would type, but here we are.
Authentic luxury is within reach for that kind of money
You could purchase several high-end used watches
One of my tragic flaws as a human being is that I am simultaneously a watch guy, a car guy, and a gaming guy. Somehow, the lady hasn’t left me yet, but aside from my expensive hobbies, you can surf eBay all day and find genuine used Rolex, Omega, and plenty of other watches for much less than $5k. If you really wanted to, you could revamp an entire collection with that kind of money, and if you’re smart about what you buy, flip it for a profit later on.
In no world should any GPU cost more than an education, a Rolex, or even a Hobbit house, but this is 2026, and anything is possible, it seems. If you’re thinking about building that PC this year, maybe hold off for just a bit.
