Sony has dropped a bombshell announcement, as it’s ending physical disc production for PlayStation consoles starting in 2028, marking a shift to digital-only sales for its games.
The PlayStation 5 era kicked off with Sony offering a digital-only version of the system, one that was available for a cheaper price, but lacked a disc drive. This marked a whole new direction for the company, which matched up with the slow decline of brick and mortar game stores, as consumers moved towards buying digital versions of titles, rather than pre-ordering physical copies and waiting for them to arrive.
Sony Will No Longer Produce PlayStation Discs Starting In January 2028
In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony announced that it would stop producing physical discs for all PlayStation systems starting in January 2028. This means that new PlayStation games sold after that time can only be purchased via the PlayStation Store, with codes available to buy through retailers.
The announcement was also joined by a separate post on the PlayStation Blog about how the digital services for the PlayStation 3 and Vita will shut down worldwide on July 2027. This might not have been the best time to announce the closure, as it outlines exactly why physical media are important, and how some games are going to be gone forever, including one’s people purchased.
The PlayStation 6 Is Officially A Digital-Only System
The writing was on the wall when Rockstar revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 wouldn’t receive a physical release, with many signaling it as the death knell for discs. While a lot of conspiracy theorists will point to this as some grand scheme to remove ownership of games, the truth is that physical copies of sales have dwindled over the years, with people preferring instant access and ownership, especially for titles they know they’ll be playing a lot.
This doesn’t mean that eliminating physical media is a good thing, as it means that people are no longer owning video games, but are renting them. When the digital services for the PlayStation 5 end, the games people purchased after 2028 could potentially be gone forever.
One thing the announcement has confirmed is that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will be a digital-only system, something fans have speculated about for a while. This marks the first Sony console to have no physical media option available, which is a sad statement to make. Hopefully, there will be legislation introduced in the future (possibly through movements like Stop Killing Games) that will give consumers protection from losing their games, as the digital-only era means no one truly owns the titles they pay for anymore.
