Gundam’s Forgotten ’90s Anime Finally Returns for 30th Anniversary

Gundam’s Forgotten ’90s Anime Finally Returns for 30th Anniversary

The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise branched out in the 1990s, resulting in multiple spinoffs, some of which are still the most well-known entries. These ranks also included a rather underrated anime that’s now receiving a major birthday celebration.

The After War Gundam X Blu-ray Memorial Box is being released as an “encore edition,” with this honoring the latest anniversary of the anime. This comes after similar celebrations for the preceding “alternate universe” Gundam anime. Featuring the complete series and multiple add-ons, this and an archival book can now be pre-ordered to really ring in the occasion.

Sunrise’s After War Gundam X Blu-ray Memorial Box was originally released in 2018, and it’s coming back out eight years later to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the anime. All 39 episodes are included, as well as audio commentary for six episodes and the prologue manga “If I’m With You.” This gives fans the entire story of the self-contained After War timeline, which has never been revisited in subsequent Gundam entries.

However, for further clarification on the history of the show, fans can also purchase the After War Gundam X: Complete Records A.W. 30th Chronicle guidebook. This two-volume archive looks at the development history of the anime, detailing the production of the story, as well as character and mobile suit concept art and even episode breakdowns.

The episodes for the Blu-ray collection are spread across eight discs, giving viewers just over 14 hours of Gundam action. Both products can be pre-ordered through websites such as A-On Store, although for now at least, it appears to be a Japanese-only release. The Chronicle Book is listed for roughly US$100 and is set to be released on Jan. 26, 2027, while the After War Gundam X Blu-ray Memorial Box will release two months later for roughly US$400.

After War Gundam X was the third alternate-universe Gundam anime, coming after the unrelated Mobile Fighter G Gundam and New Mobile Report Gundam Wing. The latter series went on to become the first in the Gundam franchise to be televised in the West, and as a result, it’s incredibly beloved by fans beyond Japan. This is also why its 30th anniversary celebration in 1995 was so immense, especially compared to its preceding and succeeding compatriots.

Not nearly as well-known or as iconic as Wing or G Gundam, Gundam X has since become seen as something of an underrated gem. Its 30th anniversary release coincides with the reveal of multiple new and re-released model kits and collectibles for the anime. Along with the pending Blu-ray collection, fans can also stream the anime (with English subtitles) on the free Tubi TV streaming platform, which also hosts Mobile Suit Gundam AGE.
