Steam is a treasure trove of both premium and completely free titles, the latter of which is, naturally, often more preferable. Free games have developed a stigma for being low-quality or financially predatory, but not every free title on the platform is like that. Sure, for every one genuinely great free game there are 100 gacha titles, but, hidden among the bevy of so-called free-to-play games are legitimately great, novel, and often downright impressive free games well worth adding to one’s Steam library.
Nestled within this categorization of free titles is a game that absolutely needs to be seen to be believed. It is being heralded as one of the best free games on Steam, or at least certainly the best in a very long time, after having garnered a significant amount of critical acclaim. This Steam game is well worth checking out, especially for those eager to expand their library, pay absolutely nothing for the privilege, and try out something fresh and new while they’re at it.
Had someone told you that you’d be playing a game starring a guitar-playing rooster attempting to woo and subsequently kiss a dragon in 2026, and that said game would be universally beloved by fans, you’d likely tell them to leave you alone. Yet, here we are, with the completely free Steam game, Dragon Kisser, a game legitimately about a dancing, guitar-playing, double-jumping rooster called Domingo who, when a dragon attacks his village, decides the best course of action is to kiss it.
Despite the inherently goofy, yet, admittedly, rather inspired premise, Dragon Kisser actually sports a lot of varied gameplay mechanics that have delighted those who’ve played it. Players switch between different stages of gameplay as they attempt to take down Dragon Kisser’s single boss (pun absolutely intended), Luciana. First, players will need to dodge deadly blasts of fire from the dragon herself, before then grabbing one of the items thrown by nearby villagers and engaging with some form of minigame.
Dragon Kisser only takes around 15 minutes to beat, although more time can be spent on subsequent runs attempting other dialogue options and getting higher scores on the various available minigames.
There’s a dancing minigame, guitar-playing minigame, and flirtatious questions with Luciana herself to enjoy, all of which get Domingo one step closer to kissing the dragon. Dragon Kisser is short, but very sweet, and designed to be replayable. At the time of writing, it has amassed 95% positive reviews on Steam, giving it a Very Positive rating, praising the game’s smooth animations, fun premise, and aforementioned minigames.
Dragon Kisser was developed by students at the BYU Center for Animation and published by the university itself. Several of the university’s student’s projects are actually also available for free on Steam, each of them sporting similarly unique premises and gameplay mechanics. While it remains to be seen if Dragon Kisser can obtain the status of best indie game on Steam (or perhaps just best free indie game), it has certainly won the hearts of many, and will likely win over yours if you consider giving it a try.
