When the animated hit series X-Men ’97 returns for Season 2 on Disney+, fans are in for quite a ride and will get tossed right into the action. Fortunately, the tie-in comic book will fill in some of the blanks.
There’s only so much story that the Marvel Studios creative team was able to get into each exciting episode. After such a lengthy hiatus, the story picks up six months after the cliffhanger, and there’s been a great deal happening. The X-Men are lost in time, and they may not recognize the 90s if, and when, they get back. The Marvel Comics tie-in will help keep fans engaged and provide additional backstory.
At the end of X-Men ’97 Season One, the X-Men find themselves lost in the time stream. One group was sent to a dystopian future, while another team was sent back to Egypt in 3000 B.C. What does each point in time have in common? Each is a critical juncture in the life experience of their longtime adversary, Apocalypse.
The X-Men, who were left behind in the 90s, have serious problems of their own, as anti-mutant hysteria is reaching a fever pitch and mutants are apparently being arrested by a new government agency calling itself X-Factor. Writer Steve Foxe worked closely with the animated series’ writers to expand the story and bring more drama and excitement to the X-Men ’97 Season 2 Limited Series comic book tie-in.
The story in the tie-in takes place between the two seasons and extends into the first episodes of the new season. “That involved a lot of cooperation with the Marvel Studios team,” Foxe admitted, “who were incredibly generous with their time and insight.” It gave Foxe a certain amount of freedom to incorporate members of the supporting cast, and even some new faces, to get a little more screen time.
With an emphasis on character drama and excitement, limited series artist Salva Espin beautifully captures the show’s tone and tenor, creating a seamless experience. Foxe added their effort, “not only helps to bridge the gap between seasons, but will actually end up providing additional content on characters and plot developments you’ll experience all season long.”
X-Men ’97 Limited Series Promises To Bridge The Two Seasons
Marvel’s Mighty Mutants has apparently never been hotter! The new season of the animated series has received exceptional reviews and holds one of the highest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its premiere. With audiences hungry for original content, the limited-series tie-in is sure to satisfy eager readers, especially those curious to experience the entire story.
Marvel Studios has also promised, following the announcement that X-Men ’97 has already been renewed for two more seasons, that the time between seasons will be much more reasonable. If it’s any indicator, tie-ins like Foxe and Espin’s current limited series will prove just as popular. When a series is so carefully crafted to be part of the canon, it only helps enhance the story beyond the screen and onto the page.
Marvel Animation’s X-Men ‘97 Season 2 premieres July 1st and will be streaming exclusively on Disney+.
