There is terrible news to report regarding the God of War series. The film adaptation of the legendary video game franchise that features Kratos as its lead character garnered massive momentum once the announcement was made as to which actor was secured to play the role of the tumultuous and visceral Spartan.
Ryan Hurst, of Sons of Anarchy fame, was granted the honor after delivering an electric performance as Thor in God of War: Ragnarok on Playstation 5.
The cast was hailed by fans of the franchise and also by those who know just how great of an actor Hurst is but, unfortunately, he will no longer portray Kratos in God of War, and for a reason we can only hope for better news down the road on.
Ryan Hurst Severely Injured Filming God of War, Kratos Being Recast
The report comes via Deadline, and it’s gut-wrenching, to say the least: “This is a shocker: Prime Video‘s God Of War will have a new actor playing Kratos as the lead role in the high-profile fantasy drama series is being recast, Deadline has learned.”
It continued: “The decision, made after careful consideration by the studios on the show, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, comes after Ryan Hurst, who had been originally cast as Kratos, was seriously injured on the set of the PlayStation video game adaptation in late June.”
The report builds on an initial one from TMZ that states Hurts suffered a torn bicep during filming, an injury that required surgery to repair and often carries a rehabilitation time of several months, barring any potential setback that could extend his recovery time.
When Will God of War Resume Production for Prime Video?
The injury means Hurst would not have been medically cleared to continue filming until 2027, at some point, leading to Amazon MGM pivoting altogether.
The new actor set to portray Kratos in Hurst’s place has not yet been announced, and production for God of War is expected to resume in mid-October. There is also no word on if the delay will impact the eventual release date on Prime Video, but our top priority is currently sending well wishes to Hurst in hopes of a speedy recovery.
God of War will follow the story of Kratos and his son Atreus (Loki), played by child actor Callum Vinson, following the same arc as God of War: Ragnarok, in that the two are seeking to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife/Atreus’ mother Faye a.k.a. the giant Laufey.
The initial casting was complete and Deadline reports four episodes were already in the books, meaning production will start from scratch.
