Dragon Ball is waving one last goodbye to Xenoverse 2 with a bittersweet nod to Goku’s iconic look on the manga’s final volume cover.
The July 8 release of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2’s conclusory DLC, Future Saga Chapter 4, brought with it a new story alongside plenty of other additions including new playable characters and new outfits for players’ CACs. The coolest new costume that come with the DLC is an homage to Goku’s iconic wave goodbye to the fans on the cover of Dragon Ball manga Volume 42 (DBZ Volume 26).
While Goku never really wore that greenish-gray gi with blue pants again, Dragon Ball fans can now relive that bittersweet moment one last time with their own characters in Xenoverse 2’s final DLC.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Farewells Fans With Goku’s Iconic Volume 42 Design
The coloring of this gi is wholly unique to anything Goku has worn before or since, though there have been plenty of times the series got close. During the Peaceful World Saga, Goku wears that same gi, but the colors in various versions of the story differ in subtle ways. In most other colored appearances of the manga, Goku’s gi appears a darker green, with green pants (as in the colored “Thank you goodbye” panel on the last page).
In the anime version of the Peaceful World Saga, Goku’s gi is a light blue with green pants, as though homing his very first gi at the start of Dragon Ball. This blue coloring was then the one that stuck as the anime continued into Dragon Ball GT. Xenoverse 2’s decision to use that very specific color of gray-green that wasn’t in the anime or manga makes it clear that it’s referencing the final volume cover art Toriyama created as a farewell to the audience.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Future Saga Chapter 4 tells the story of the Time Patrol’s final battle with Fu. Notably, this storyline also introduced a brand-new transformation for Goku called Ultra Supervillain Quelled, which was the result of Goku overcoming Fu’s Ultra Supervillain mind control, similar to how Majin Vegeta gained a power-up by appropriating Babidi’s brainwashing strength boost.
Another interesting move Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2’s final DLC made was its tie-in to the upcoming Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3. XV3 takes place in Age 1000, several hundred years into the future after the events of Dragon Ball Super and the End of Z. At the end of Xenoverse 2’s Future Saga Chapter 4, Fu takes the player on a brief trip to the future, where players witness a version of West City that’s identical to that of Xenoverse 3.
While Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is saying goodbye to the classic time period fans have come to know for 40 years, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is taking the franchise into the future to start a brand-new chapter for the Z Fighters and their distant descendants.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is scheduled for release in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Steam on PC.
