The popular anime production company Studio Trigger is working on a new project, and fans were immediately psyched to learn that the creators behind it are some of the most beloved faces in the industry. From Gridman Universe and Promare to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Delicious in Dungeon, Studio Trigger has been responsible for some of the most popular anime series to be released over the past decade, and despite relatively few details being shared so far, this new project promises to quickly become another fan favorite.
Founded by former Gainax employee Hiroyuki Imaishi after the wild success of 2007’s coming-of-age adventure series Gurren Lagann, Studio Trigger has become synonymous with high quality anime productions since its formation in 2011. Its first original work, Kill la Kill, was released in 2013, with the action comedy anime series earning positive reviews for its creative spin on the magical girl genre and its animation style, as well as its soundtrack. In the years since, the studio has continued to release hit after hit, and thankfully, fans reportedly won’t have to wait much longer for its next work.

Studio Trigger Announces New Project from Hiroyuki Imaishi and Kazuki Nakashima
During Studio Trigger’s panel at Anime Expo 2026 on July 4, it was revealed that a new work is in production, with director Hiroyuki Imaishi and screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima set to collaborate for the fourth time. The duo previously worked on mega hits like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and the 2019 sci-fi action film Promare. During a brief interview, the pair noted that they intended to release a new project soon after Promare‘s release, but they were both sidetracked with other works over the past seven years. Now, however, the script for their new project has been completed, with storyboards currently in the works as well. More information will be revealed at a later date, but in the meantime, fans can rest easy knowing that production has officially started.
Imaishi’s 2007 work Gurren Lagann has remained a fan favorite for almost two decades, with the series currently boasting a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans and critics alike continue to praise its blend of action, comedy, drama, adventure, and sci-fi elements, along with its punchy animation style and wildly unpredictable story. Dubbed a modern classic, Gurren Lagann appears on many Best Anime of All Time lists, with the series serving as the catalyst that led to Studio Trigger’s foundation.
In the realm of feature-length anime films, 2019’s Promare has proved that it has staying power. Snagging Best Work at the 2020 Newtype Anime Awards and the Audience Prize for Best Feature Film at the Bucheon International Animation Film Festival during the same year, the film currently has a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans applauding its blend of 2D and 3D animation, gripping story, and memorable characters. During its theatrical run, Promare earned nearly $14 million at the Japanese box office and $17 million globally.
