Although Sony is ready to move on to a digital-only gaming future, fan demand for physical copies for upcoming Soulslike Mortal Shell 2 has led to a physical edition completely selling out. Anticipation for Mortal Shell 2 is clearly high, but the demand for a particular physical edition has even taken the publisher by surprise.
While the original Mortal Shell performed fairly well, selling over a million copies, the sequel doesn’t require playing it beforehand, as it’s a standalone game. That may help the game to succeed, as even Soulslike fans who didn’t check out the original game that came out six years prior will be able to simply jump in. That may have been one contributing factor in this new development.
Mortal Shell 2 Sells Out of PS5 Physical Revered Edition
Mortal Shell 2 publisher Playstack has revealed that the game’s PS5-exclusive Revered Edition, which includes a physical copy of the game, has largely sold out. Playstack says that the demand exceeded its expectations, and that “supply across a number of retailers” has already been reserved. At the time of publication, Target, Best Buy, and Amazon were all showing the PS5 Revered Edition as being sold out, though GameStop is still accepting orders. Following this announcement, that’s not likely to last, as hopeful fans may swarm the site to try and scoop up one of the remaining copies. Scalpers will likely be competing as well, so those who were hoping to secure a copy should do so as soon as possible.

Playstack has suggested that there is a chance of a second wave of Mortal Shell 2 Revered Edition being produced, but that it’s not guaranteed. The publisher is meeting with its distribution partner to discuss the matter and promised to inform fans when it knows more. However, Playstack emphasizes that the decision isn’t up to it, so the result remains to be seen. It’s also not clear how many copies of the Revered Edition were made available in the first place, so it’s difficult to gauge just how popular this edition really is. The limited physical edition of Mortal Shell 2 was only revealed about a week prior to selling out.
The timing of the Mortal Shell 2 announcement falls shortly after Sony announced that PlayStation would go all-digital starting in 2028, with no new discs produced except for games released prior to that year. A significant number of gamers have protested the change, and many have sworn to only buy physical editions of games. With this announcement looming over the PlayStation family of consoles, it’s entirely possible that there may be an uptick in purchases of physical editions as a result. Given Sony’s lack of response to the complaints from vocal gamers, however, it doesn’t seem likely for its plan to change.
With that said, Sony could be facing legal action following its announcement. Mexican federal representatives have said they intend to file an antitrust complaint against PlayStation due to this planned change. They allege that the PlayStation Store would have a monopoly without physical discs, and that the move would cause businesses specializing in used games to shut down. There’s no guarantee of success, but Sony will likely experience friction with this move, if nothing else.
