The acclaimed British comedy The Incomer debuted at Sundance earlier this year, and it’s set to be released in the UK and the United States in September. Ahead of its release, the official trailer has been unveiled, giving everyone a new sneak peek at the unique film.

The Incomer will be released in UK cinemas on Sept. 4, while the U.S. release will follow on Sept. 25. In the movie, Domhnall Gleeson (The Paper) stars as a socially awkward council official who arrives on a Scottish isle to evacuate a pair of siblings (Gayle Rankin and Grant O’Rourke) who hunt birds and talk to mythical beings. Other stars of the film include Emun Elliott, Michelle Gomez, and John Hannah. It was written and directed by Louis Paxton. The official trailer showcases the vibe of the fantasy comedy, and it can be watched below.

Ahead of the trailer drop, Sumerian Pictures promoted its release with a stunt on Reddit. A post was made with the studio claiming to have “hired a Scotsman to yell at the ocean,” calling upon users to type whatever they wanted him to say in the comments section. These posts were followed by responses that included videos of the “real Highlander” howling the comments exactly as written, no matter how bizarre they might be. The results are as random as expected, from Seinfeld, Anchorman, and I Know What You Did Last Summer quotes to, “Scotland should have won the World Cup!”

Per the synopsis, The Incomer is a “modern folk fairy tale set on a remote Scottish island, where two siblings survive by hunting seabirds, retelling the stories of their ancestors, and defending the isle from dreaded Incomers.’ Their world is upended with the arrival of an awkward council worker who has come to uproot them from their homeland on behalf of the government.”

With its early reviews, The Incomer has scored a very high approval rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The nearly-unanimous praise touches on how the feature is able to draw laughs with its zaniness and quirky humor, but at the same time, it’s more touching than some viewers might expect.

“Quirky, but heartwarming and charming to a fault, The Incomer is a wonderful mix of fairy tale and comedy; a film that will make your ribs sore and your heart soar,” as THN’s Kat Hughes said about the film.

The Latino Slant’s Rosa Parra echoed, “The Incomer has some awkward and unserious moments, but at its core, it’s a heartfelt tribute to belonging, home, personal growth, and self-esteem. It is charming, filled with odd characters and heartfelt moments.”

The Incomer will be released in U.S. movie theaters on Sept. 25, 2026.
