Netflix has officially greenlit a reality competition series based on the iconic board game Monopoly. Studio Lambert will produce the show in association with Hasbro Entertainment.
The series will feature 12 contestants competing for a $2 million grand prize on a life-sized Monopoly Town Square. The show has begun casting and is set to premiere in autumn 2027. Before a single production company was picked, the project had pulled in serious interest from across the industry.
Netflix Monopoly Series Competition Format
Netflix described the show’s premise in an official logline, “On a life-sized, fully realized Monopoly Town Square, 12 players will enter on equal footing. But equality won’t last long. To survive, contestants must accumulate everything, or lose it all.“
“Every negotiation, every decision, and every roll could mean the difference between building an empire and going directly to jail.” The elimination format continues from there: “One by one, bankrupt players are eliminated — until a single winner is left standing to take it all.“
Studio Lambert Wins Netflix Monopoly Bake-Off
Netflix secured the rights to Monopoly from Hasbro last year before opening the project to a competitive production bake-off that drew approximately 50 companies. Studio Lambert won that process and was awarded the commission.
Jeff Gaspin, Netflix’s recently departed unscripted head, had identified the show as a priority project and told Deadline he was convinced to greenlight it without a formal pitch, citing, in part, the commercial success of the mobile game Monopoly Go! Gaspin approved the project before he departed from the streamer.
The Team Behind The Show
Studio Lambert’s executive producers on the project are Nia Yemoh, Tim Harcourt, Jack Burgess, Stephen Lambert, and Kim Murphy. Gabriel Marano and Zachary Edwin executive produce for Hasbro Entertainment.
Banijay recently acquired All3Media, the parent company of Studio Lambert, and the two now operate together as Banijay Entertainment, a combined production entity with an enterprise value of $8 billion.
The company previously produced The Traitors for Peacock and currently produces Squid Game: The Challenge for Netflix. Studio Lambert also produced The Circle for Netflix, a format now being remade for Hulu.
