Banned 2026 Revenge Thriller Already Getting a New Follow-Up Release This Month

Filmmaker Uwe Boll has often found himself in the middle of controversy, though these controversies are normally centered around how poorly received his movies are. Boll never shies away from backlash, and often leans into those detracting viewpoints. His latest movie, Citizen Vigilante, saw setbacks as soon as it was announced, as its original title was “The Dark Knight,” ultimately earning the expected pushback from Warner Bros. over the moniker. By starring Armie Hammer, who is mounting a comeback after being named in various emotional and physical abuse allegations, it only added more controversy to the project.

Due to the movie’s violence and sensitive subject matter, Boll’s home country of Germany refused to give it a rating unless he made cuts to the picture. Boll refused to make these cuts, essentially banning it from release, and shortly after its streaming debut, the filmmaker himself released it for free online for 48 hours. The stunt was enough to generate plenty of interest and Citizen Vigilante took a foothold in various streaming charts.

Less than a month after its debut, Citizen Vigilante is confirmed to be expanding with a video game release. The official PlayStation Store description teases, “When the system fails, justice becomes personal. A city consumed by crime. A system pushed to its limits. People are losing faith. You are Sanders — not a hero, not a savior, but a man who decided to act. Take justice into your own hands, hunt down criminals, uncover corruption, and face the consequences of your actions. Some will call you a hero. Others will call you a threat. The official game based on the film by Uwe Boll.” The Citizen Vigilante game will be released on Jul. 16.

This new release seems to honor the source material and all of its violence, as PlayStation adds that the game features:

  • Brutal, fast-paced action combat
  • Gritty, violent gameplay with gore and dismemberment
  • Story-driven vigilante experience

At this point, it’s unknown if there was always a plan to expand the world of the movie into a video game to release around the time of the movie’s debut or if there was an untitled video game that featured overlapping elements that earned the moniker of the movie to cash in on its growing notoriety. With Boll’s movie being turned into a game, it marks a noticeable shift from the trajectory of his other projects, as he’s adapted a number of video games into movies.

In fact, video game movies are both to thank and to blame of Boll’s career. The filmmaker has delivered the adaptations House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, In the Name of the King, Postal, and Far Cry. It seems like now Boll gets to see if his original stories fare better when expanded into the digital world as opposed to the other way around.
